Discipline Is Destiny: My Battle With Video Game Addiction

Writer: Jack McveighJack Mcveigh

Are you in control of your life?

Do you create your own reality?

Are you a slave to your surroundings?

Like many young men, I was addicted to video games.

The controller consumed me.

My focus.

My time.

My relationships.

My life.

Video games played me, I didn’t play video games.

In college, I would race home from practice.

The computer was ready to go.

No time to waste.

Hours and hours wasted by staring at the screen.

I had to be the best gamer possible.

Nothing else mattered.

Now, I'm not saying gaming is bad.

But, when I wasn’t getting the basketball results I desired, I had to review MY habits.

Was this how I wanted my life to look?

No.

One on-court failure led to another.

Something had to change.

I had to take control back over my life.

It wasn’t easy.

I failed and failed again.

Some days the game would get me.

Other days my discipline would win.

Over years of trial and error, eventually, I won.

Now I can enjoy some video games when I CHOOSE to.

It also wasn’t a coincidence that my basketball career improved when I took back control of my life.

On a recent road trip to New Zealand, I finished reading an incredible book.

Discipline is Destiny by Ryan Holiday.

If you are struggling with self-control this book would be great for you.

Reflect and review what has power over you in your life.

Be kind to yourself on reflection.

We are all a slave to something.

Try and make sure that something benefits you.
