My Most Important Daily Habit

It’s my mum’s birthday today.

I am overwhelmed with gratitude.

I am grateful for an unlimited amount of moments and blessings with her.

Gratitude plays an extremely important part in my basketball journey and life.

Ever since I learned about the idea of a “happiness set point”, gratitude practice has become a staple of my every day life.

The “happiness set point” is the idea that people have a baseline of happiness that remains stable over their lifetime, with a person returning to baseline after positive or negative occur.

One of the only ways of raising that baseline is the practice of gratitude.

My favourite practice consists of imagining my life in which I don’t have something I currently do.

Helping me instantly feel gratitude.

Imagine your life without a toilet?

When was the last time you were grateful for your toilet?

Without actively practicing gratitude, your toilet doesn’t bring you any happiness.

But if it was taken away, I guarantee you would miss it.

This same idea transfers to everything.

Sad sitting on the bench, grateful to be on the team.

Sad you didn’t make the team, grateful you can try out.

Grateful to breathe.

Grateful to move.

Grateful for my mum.

Take a moment when you read this to be grateful for the things you have, because it doesn’t last forever.
